DEPUTY - LONGFELLOW POINT SHERIFF'S OFFICE
Deputy Carl Birch
By Ellis Glass - Deputy Carl Birch - Longfellow Point
Thirty-five and broad-shouldered, Carl Birch is one of four deputies on the Longfellow Point force. He was born in town, left to join the Marines, and came back. He speaks slowly and listens even more slowly, which Margaret first mistook for a different kind of slowness, before she reconsidered twice and landed on the opposite conclusion.
He's the steady second pair of eyes on a case: patient at a keyboard, unrattled at a scene, and quietly the one who will say the plain, hard thing out loud when no one else will. Margaret decided in her second week that she liked him, and decided, just as firmly, not to let him see it yet.
